The World Wide Web - What is it?
The World Wide Web is part of the Internet, they are not the same thing, however they are related. The Internet's network is the essence of the web, although the web itself is something different. The web consists of a large collection of documents stored on computers around the globe. The "web" is the universe of information available via hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP). - What makes the web interesting is that it contains hyper links (links) that allow you to point to another web page by clicking on the link. The link is usually underlined or highlighted text with color. (see example below : Web Browser - this link will take you to the next web page).
- It understands other Internet protocols, such as FTP, gopher and Telnet.
- A web page is a document on the web that can include text, pictures, sound and video.
- Colleges, universities, government agencies, companies or individuals create and maintain a variety of web pages which are referred to as a web site.
- What makes Web pages available to the world is a computer connected to the Internet called a Web server.
Now that we have a little better understanding of what the World Wide Web is about, lets continue on to the Web Browser section where we can explore the information we just learn. |
